The landscape
When approaching from Sønderborg by road, about 10 kilometres further on, you pass a deep valley.
Here runs the Vibæk stream, the longest and most water-rich watercourse on South Als. It originates about 8 kilometres further north and disappears into Hørup Hav at the former shipping point Taskland. The Vibæk Mills were located here because the natural conditions created better chances for good milling days and because, with its proximity to the loading area, Taskland, it could receive barges and steamships from Flensburg that were sent with grain to be ground at the mill.
At Taskland Kro, a few hundred metres south of the watermill, the many people who arrived by boat with their cargo were accommodated at that time.
The goods, including grain and flour, were transported in horse-drawn carts along the narrow road, which still exists. It leads directly past the driveway to Vibæk Mill, the buildings and large mill pond of which can be glimpsed from the road.
